POLYPOITIS (POLYPOITES), Creativity and Expression

The activities of the non-profit organization POLYPOITIS focus on the cultural, educational, environmental, and touristic development of the region. Through initiatives and projects, POLYPOITIS aims to highlight the area’s cultural heritage, strengthen creative expression, and contribute to the sustainable growth of the local community.

Our name is inspired by the ancient tradition of the hero Polypoites, son of Peirithous. As a leader of the Thessalians in the Trojan War, Polypoites connects our homeland with ancient history and myth. In an era when regions seek ways to honor memory and creativity, POLYPOITIS undertakes the mission of bringing the legacy of the area into the present.

We invite you to become part of this vision — whether as participants in our activities or as partners in ideas. Together, we can make Elassona and the wider region a place of inspiration, knowledge, and cultural revival.

POLYPOITIS (POLYPOITES), MYTHOLOGICAL DEEDS

One of the most renowned rulers of Elassona was Polypoites, who took part in the Trojan War and was celebrated for his heroic deeds.

In Greek mythology, the name Polypoites is best known as the son of Peirithous and Hippodamia — one of the suitors of Helen of Troy — and a close companion of Leonteus.

According to myth, Polypoites joined the Trojan War as the commander of forty ships carrying men from Argissa, Gyrtone, Orthe, Elassona — referred to in ancient texts as “white Oloosson” — and another Thessalian city under his rule. He was distinguished for his bravery in battle and is said to have been among the warriors who entered the Trojan Horse.

Polypoites is regarded as the first Greek discus champion mentioned in ancient literature, as Homer in his Iliada speaks with admiration of the unparalleled athletic skill of the Lapith leader.

Our name draws inspiration from the ancient tradition of the hero Polypoites, son of Peirithous. As the leader of the Thessalians during the Trojan War, Polypoites connects our homeland with ancient history and myth. In an age when communities seek to honor both memory and creativity, POLYPOITIS undertakes the mission of bringing the legacy of the region into the present.

MYTH AND IDENTITY

Polypoites was the son of Peirithous and Hippodamia, and belonged to the Lapiths — the mythical tribe of Thessaly. In Iliada, he is mentioned as the leader of the Thessalian forces (with men from Argissa, Gyrtone, Orthe, and Oloosson) who took part in the campaign against Troy. According to mortal legends, he was among those who entered the Trojan Horse. Furthermore, in the funeral games for Patroclus, Polypoites is said to have competed in the discus throw — winning the prize by throwing the discus farther than any other contestant.

After the war, tradition holds that he was present at the funerals of Calchas and Patroclus. In the region of Elassona, the ancient city of Oloosson is believed to have been one of the local centers that fell under the rule or influence of Polypoites.
